Liquid crystal material itself does not emit light. It acts more like a “light valve,” relying on the backlight system to provide illumination before it can display an image. The core task of a backlight is to convert a point or linear light source into a highly uniform surface light source.

Disassembling the backlight: A set of precise optical systems

A high-performance backlight is the result of advanced materials science and precision optical engineering. Its core components include:

Light Source: The origin of light, determining the backlight’s basic color temperature, brightness, and lifespan.

Light Guide Plate (LGP): The key to uniform light distribution. Micro-structured dots on the bottom surface scatter light entering from the edge across the entire plane. Precision molded dots typically deliver better optical performance than traditional printed dots.

Optical Film Set: Diffuser films, brightness enhancement films (BEF), and reflective sheets work together to eliminate hot spots, improve frontal light output efficiency, and ensure uniformity.

Structural Frame and Light Board: Provide stable mechanical support and reliable electrical connections.

Depending on the structure, backlights fall into two main technology routes:

Direct-Lit: LED arrays are placed directly beneath the light guide plate for direct illumination. This offers high brightness and supports local dimming control.

Edge-Lit: LED light bars are positioned on the sides of the light guide plate. Light enters from the edge and is reflected forward through the plate, making this the key to achieving ultra-slim designs.

Three types of light sources, each with its own advantages.

LED Backlighting: High brightness, long lifespan (over 30,000 hours for edge-lit), low power consumption, and a slim form factor. It is the mainstream choice for everything from consumer electronics to industrial displays.

EL (Electroluminescent) Backlighting: Ultra-thin, perfectly uniform across the entire surface, and flexible/bendable. It remains indispensable for customized LCDs and flexible display applications.

CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) Backlighting: Largely replaced by LEDs in consumer products, but still valuable in certain professional display applications due to its excellent color saturation and uniformity.
